LGBTQ+ Pride: A History of Pride Parades and Pride Month
Pride Parades
The first Pride parade was held in New York City in June 1970, one year after the Stonewall Riots. The parade was organized by activist Brenda Howard and attracted thousands of participants. Pride parades have since been held in cities and towns across the world, and they have become an important symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and visibility.
In 1981, the Pride Parade in Sydney, Australia, moved its date to the summertime. This change was made to coincide with the Mardi Gras festival, which is one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in the world. The Sydney Pride Parade is now held in February each year, and it attracts over 300,000 participants.
Pride Month
Pride Month is celebrated in June in the United States and many other countries. The month was first designated as Pride Month by President Bill Clinton in 1999. Pride Month is a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and to raise awareness of the issues that LGBTQ+ people face.
During Pride Month, there are many events held across the United States and around the world. These events include parades, festivals, and rallies. Pride Month is also a time for LGBTQ+ people to come together and build community.
