Oklahoma Tornadoes 2023

Severe Weather and Tornado Season Update

AccuWeather Predicts Active Tornado Season

The Oklahoma tornado season is in full swing with five tornadoes already touching down in the state so far in 2023. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the state typically experiences an average of 55 tornadoes per year. However, AccuWeather is predicting an above-average season with 1055 to 1200 tornadoes expected to touch down across the United States throughout 2023.

This prediction is slightly below the historical average of 1200 tornadoes per year. However, it is still significantly higher than the number of tornadoes that have occurred in recent years. In 2022, there were only 862 tornadoes reported in the United States. The increase in tornado activity is likely due to a combination of factors, including climate change and changes in weather patterns.

The NWS warns that strong tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds are forecast for Oklahoma in the coming months. In addition, excessive rainfall with numerous flash floods is also a threat. Residents are urged to be prepared for severe weather and to take precautions to stay safe.

Here are some tips for staying safe during tornado season:

  • Have a plan in place for what to do if a tornado warning is issued.
  • Identify a sturdy shelter in your home or office building where you can take cover.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • Listen to local weather reports for updates on the storm.
  • Be aware of the signs of a tornado, such as a funnel cloud, loud roaring noise, and debris flying through the air.

If you see a tornado, take shelter immediately. Do not try to outrun the storm in your car. The safest place to be is in a sturdy building below ground level.
